Welcome to the
website Balkan Military History.
Balkan Military History is devoted to the study of the military history of the Balkans.
It is aimed primarily at wargamers and others with an interest in the region and its fascinating history.
BMH has been online since 1997 and this is our 15th year of continuous operation.
History of course is never neutral and this is particularly true in the Balkans.
This site is based in Scotland and has no affiliations with any Balkan state or organisation.
We hope you enjoy our site and any comments, views or contributions would be very welcome to:

What's New - January 2012

1812
This year is the 200th anniversary of Napoleon's
invasion of Russia and will no doubt be the cause of much analysis of
that campaign.
In Balkan history,
1812 is
also the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of Bucharest that
ended the Russo-Turkish War
that had been raging intermittently since 1806. This Treaty enabled the
Tsar to redeploy units to face Napoleon. In this article we also examine
how Kutuzov developed a strategy against the Ottomans that was to be
crucial to his defeat of Napoleon.

| The first
Black Powder rules supplement, The Last Argument of Kings
has been published. This covers battles of the 18th Century.
Of particular Balkan interest is the chapter Storm
on the Danube covering the conflicts between the Ottomans and
Hapsburgs in the Balkans. The feature battle is
Petrovaradin, an action we have
covered. Our own Austrian and
Ottoman armies for the conflict will be seeing action using these rules
soon.

| Latest update to
Armies of the
Balkans is a new project covering the
Russo-Turkish War 1877 in 28mm using the
Outpost Miniatures
range. First off we have Turkish, Russian and Bulgarian infantry.
Lovely figures.

| The Editor's latest Balkan travels took in the
Hungarian capital, Budapest.
Both the
National and Military museums have a good collection of exhibits. Plus
the Heroes' Square, the citadel and castle district are all worth a
visit.

Reviews
This month in books we have
The Hungarian Army 1848-49. Ralf Weaver's description of the Hungarian
forces in the great uprising of 1848. He covers the organisation,
weapons and uniforms of the Honved including some lovely colour plates.
We also have some new 28mm figures for
the Greek army of 1940. Local Scot David Burns has produced a fine range
of figures that are sold through
Rif
Raf Miniatures. Rifles, mortars and LMGs so far, mostly with the
'Italian' helmet option.
